Our supply systems here in the US are the most efficient in the world as long as everything keeps rolling. Many large stores receive anywhere from 6-12 deliveries a day. As items are scanned at each register they are duly noted by the computer system and tallied for replacement. Most stores are stocked every night to keep shelves full. But look what happens when an even small snow storm happens in NC. First when the news comes out there is a run on the stores and essential supplies disappear. Next comes the snow and for as much as three days the shelves are empty of some essential items until supply chain can be reestablished.
A significant but not major event would shut the system down for possibly a few weeks and that in of itself would be a disaster and not just in America. After 9-11 Tony Blair sponsored a study to check the preparedness of the citizens of Great Britain. The report came back stating that Great Britain was 3 days from anarchy. It pointed to the fact that most citizens did not have the supplies on hand to survive more than 3 days if supply chain broke down and I am sure that the same is true of America. 3 days into even a significant event things wills tart to go to hell relatively quickly. The American people show their soul annually at so called Black Friday sales events as they trample, beat and pepper spray each other to get the best Holiday bargains possible. I use the term Holiday because the birth of Christ should never be associated with such behavior. Such violence over a Tickle Me Elmo or the newest X Box just what will people do when they need food and water?
To expect the government to nationally say nothing about globally improve the reliability of supply chains in the case of even a mild to significant event is likened to believing in the tooth fairy. ain't gonna happen folks. The best they might be able to do is to stock strategic bunkers so that they can fall back and take care of themselves while the rest of us are hung out to dry. This includes the majority of the military if it is a major event. Those in charge will fall back and cover their own butts while everybody else is on their own. Of course they hope when the dust settles they can come out and take charge again of whatever is left.
They just might not like what they find when they crawl out of their bunkers. Those left may not be too happy to see them...
