Only the Self-Reliant Remain FreeNovember 20, 2013 - 4:26 AM, By Terence P. Jeffrey Who had more freedom? Was it the pioneer who rode horseback across the Midwest, settled in a wide-open space without paved roads, grocery stores or hospitals, and he had to build his own home, cultivate his own food and educate his own children? Or was it the less-adventuresome brother he left behind in an Eastern city who lived next door to a hospital, across the street from a public school and kitty corner from a grocery store — but in his later years, he could only get to work if he rode a public transit line and if the transit line ran on time? I vote for the pioneer. He was not dependent on government. His brother was. cnsnews.com/commentary/terence-p-jeffrey/only-self-reliant-remain-free

Truth is a always relevant to your opinion.
Good piece, but it leaves as many questions unanswered as it answers. The comparison of the two lifestyles is as prevalent today as it was back then. If you move to the hinter lands you must give up much unless you spent a lot of time preparing. This period of preparation had to also have been taken while continuing to eat, sleep, shelter, work and transport needed things from where you are to where you want to be.
Then what happens if the populace follows you there and institutes all that you departed to avoid? This was what made me decide to shelter in place during the coming bad times. I have seen the same idiots alive and flourishing in the back lands of this nation. Waiting till more people arrive to establish THEIR TRIBE. Under THEIR direction. For THEIR chance to be king Frog.
Here I have a pre-set area where many will move out of to avoid the coming bad times. I have spent time quietly putting things away where a searcher would be hard pressed to find them. I have established myself as a poor older assH@(3 with little manners and little resources. Mostly not worth the trouble of getting in a mess with. Will it work only the bodies will tell.
However 68 year old farts have no business running through the forest looking for food and medicine.

I would love to get to the point of 100% self reliance.
I need to do more work on the farm to get it where it is self sufficient. At the same time, getting myself to the point where I can live that life style 100%.
Even then there will be somethings I can never build on the farm, but I can get the farm to the point it cover the cost of such items.
Right now I am working on getting the forge, the foundry, and the machine shop up and working.
The next step will be selfsufficent when it comes to water.
Then get where the farm supplies all of our meat and most of our food.

I had not watched an episode of Doomsday Preppers since they first started to air them. I found them sensationalizing the extreme if for nothing more than viewer impact. I did catch a a preview for one that was airing concerning a prepper whose entire plan was based off coming to take what you had. He and his group were planning on and training to become mauraders. I watched a little of the program. This is the biggest threat the prepper will face from random mobs thta have not prepared to groups that have actually trained to comre and take what you have. You can be as self reliant as you need to be but if you cannot defend and protect what you have it will mean little.

You can be as self reliant as you need to be but if you cannot defend and protect what you have it will mean little. That is why you will need force multipliers. Night Vision, weapons able to send out a larger number of projectiles, or things that are not legal to make at this time. That means you may need to learn how to make those items and what is needed to make those items today. You might need to learn how to make your area harder to approach, or too costly to take. Be smart and keep it legal while we are not in a "With Out Rule of Law" situation.
