h/t to WRSA... read it all, as well as embed links. Know not only who, but more importantly, what you are fighting. Counterinsurgency CopsBY Herschel Smith, Aug 12 2013 CBS 60 Minutes recently did an absolutely fawning review of a police department in Springfield, Massachusetts, who claims to have implemented counterinsurgency tactics (hereafter COIN – Lesley Stahl incorrectly calls it a strategy, when it is more correctly a set of tactics, techniques and procedures). You can watch the segment on your own time, but it’s worth pointing out that 60 Minutes didn’t do anything earth-shattering in this segment. This is a fairly well known and well rehearsed report from 2012, and it is here that we will turn our attention. www.captainsjournal.com/2013/08/11/counterinsurgency-cops/

The fact of the matter is that the cops can't help. The bad guys are not ignorant klutzes. They have become as proficient in their chosen occupation as the cops have. Here in Fayetteville we had a clean up a couple years ago. The community had what the bad guys needed. Two entrances where as the cops came in one the gangs went out the other. The cops responded when called, but the gangs continued to stand around the park selling dope through the car windows. The residents got involved and started a community watch. The gangs threatened them. Then a couple soldiers returned from Iraq and took a few minutes to go to the park and ask the gang to move on since none of them lived in the community. Two days later one of the soldiers was hit from a 2X4 out a car window. The gang ran off blowing their horn. Three days later some one shot three of the dealers a they stood in the park selling dope. The dope was on the ground when the cops arrived. No one died, but the cops picked up the soldiers. No one was charged and the dealers left the park. Two weeks later some one set fire to two of the soldiers homes. One was minimally damaged the other was badly damaged. The soldiers and their family were out. Later that night the dealers returned to the park. In the early evening the dealers were all beat to inches of their lives. They were put in their own trunk, and left on the other side of town. They bust a dealer from time to time there, but no one stands in the park in plain sight anymore. The kids can again use the park. The soldiers rebuilt their homes. No one was ever charged. The cops are not there to protect the people. That was just a prop started by Jack Webb when he made the series Dragnet and Adam-12. The city of LA adapted it from those shows. The SCOTUS has repeatedly found that cops, Deputies, Highway patrols, and Federal Agents have no requirement to protect you and I. That is our job! When will we ever begin to do our job is the question.

While it is true that some of the cops on these teams are there for the action, and for the adrenalin the majority are there to do the job. In more, and more, cases these "Good Cops" are sharing the truth. Since the centurions of old Rome there have been for personal gain cops. In those days the people waited till he was doing something wrong, and would call his boss. Today we just call the newspapers. We don't make him pay. Instead we try to make his boss pay, and that works against us. Where if he was the target the City/County would let him swing when we sue them they all work together. Much of this Gestapo tacticals is driven by Federal Grants for compliance with established DHS procedures. If everyone responds the same to the same type mission then no one can get sued because it is standard practice. That is until someone gets sued SUCCESSFULLY. In the old days we hired police and Sheriffs because of their morals, COURAGE, and Fairness. Today we hire them because they keep the city/ county out of courts. The new mantra of the response genre is "The safety of the responder is paramount". So when you observe a cop getting out of line get his name.
