Excerpt from an email from Grassfire:
"We've confirmed that at least one of your South Carolina Senators supports a massive $24-billion-a-year tax mandate that's coming up for a vote next Monday, May 6.
The so-called Marketplace Fairness Act (S. 743) would mandate Internet retailers to collect sales taxes on all purchases and then send the revenue to the appropriate state and municipal taxing authorities. In theory, that money would be used for local roads, bridges, police and fire departments.
But online "storefronts" don't utilize those municipal services like traditional brick-and-mortar retailers do. As Heritage Foundation president Jim DeMint explains, the Internet sales tax "violates the classic American principle of 'no taxation without representation.' Retailers would be forced to act as tax collectors for states in which they have no voice."
While supporters claim that the bill will "level the playing field" between large and small online retailers, the opposite is true. Next week's vote on S. 743 is a direct result of intense lobbying efforts by large corporations intent on advancing the interests of big government and big business.
The losers will be consumers, who will pay the tax, and small online retailers, who don't have the administrative resources to comply with burdensome and complicated tax codes in 45 states.
+ + One Week To Short-Circuit This Bill
This online revenue raid, which is fully supported by the Obama administration, would deliver yet another punishing blow to small businesses that stand to lose customers in what is now a truly "global" economy.
As Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) says of the bill, "People are going to end up calling it the 'Shop Canada Bill' or maybe the 'Shop Mexico Bill' or, what is even more ominous, the 'Shop China Bill.'"
With just one week before Harry Reid brings this bill to the Senate floor, Grassfire has launched one of our most aggressive efforts ever -- a week-long push to generate 100,000 citizen contacts urging Senators to oppose this onerous bill."
