Ah, airing that dirty laundry that has been stuffed in the closet sure does stink up the place, after it is finally dragged out... North Myrtle Beach pays $47,802 in dashcam lawsuit
By David Wren The city of North Myrtle Beach paid $47,802 in lawyers' fees trying to keep the public from seeing an obscenity-laced police dashcam video of a confrontation between a former police officer and the wife of state Rep. Tracy Edge. The fees stem from a lawsuit filed by William Bailey, the city's former public safety director, and The Sun News in October against North Myrtle Beach after the city refused to release the video under terms of the S.C. Freedom of Information Act. The city had claimed the video was exempt from disclosure because it involved a personnel matter. City Manager Mike Mahaney fired the police officer - former Sgt. Jeff Senter - because of his actions shown on the video. Horry County Judge Benjamin Culbertson ruled last month, however, that the video is a public document. Culbertson said "the public's right to know the activities of a police officer while on duty and the possible reasons for his discharge outweigh any of the defendants' rights to privacy." That's good, but they paid her with her own and everyone else's money. Never slows down the state much when they have to pay out.
