Papers and Ideas, Defiance and SubmissionThe Barnhardt videos have caused a bit of a stir across the web. Maybe that's an understatement. I am not normally a book-burning kind of guy, I just prefer to not purchase books that I might end up burning for whatever reason. Having said that, I would burn any book I felt the desire to, just because it's nothing more than paper. The ideas represented by a book are the real power behind a book; the paper and ink is just the physical symbol of that power; it is the medium by which we internalize and digest those ideas. Is a book a threat to our liberties? I think, in all cases, no. I abhor marxism, yet I do not advocate burning The Communist Manifesto, or Das Capital. I own both, in fact. I also own Mein Kampf, Rules for Radicals, and several other books that contain ideas I find abhorrent. I have electronic copies of books by Che, and other people I would never agree with. Some of these books contain ideas I would fight. The bible has old testament scenes I find quite repulsive, as well. I have not burnt any of these books. I own a koran, and a guide to the koran, as well. I have for quite a while. As of yet, I have not burnt either. So why would I jump on the bandwagon now? In the past when I saw this in the news I neither condemned nor condoned the burning of the Koran but the very thought that there are those who believe that by rioting and killing they can direct the way I/we act as a society troubles me deeply. The very fact that Muslims can react so violently to the very idea of the burning of the Koran is foreign to all of us. At the heart of their reaction lies the truth about Islam. It is not now nor has it ever been a religion of peace. We react to their reaction to the burning of a book and seemingly more so than to the slaughter of 1000 Christians in the Ivory coast by Muslim rebels as they target Catholic priests and churches. Where is the outcry as once again Christians find themselves the target of Muslims. These rebels did not burn the Bible they slaughtered over 1000 Christians. Where is the outcry from the world over this atrocity/ Where is the condemnation from all the millions of peaceful Muslims? We are in Lybia because armed rebels attempting to overthrow their dictator were targeted by that dictator. Here Armed rebels murdered unarmed Christians in an act of ethnic cleansing. Do not fool yourself there has been a Holy War declared and it is not a new war. it has been fought since the beginnings of Islam. Religion of Peace? No theo-political doctrine aimed at subjugation and control. submit, convert or be exterminated. In the end those are the only choices you will have or you can fight. Stories like this make me undertsand why some may want to burn a Koran... www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2699404/posts
