Navy Ratings Sail into the SunsetProceedings Magazine - November 2016 If we are doing it right in the Navy—giving sailors a job that goes beyond a paycheck, one with real, sentimental attachment—they should struggle with these changes. We teach and use tradition, and when we re-invent our traditions, it takes context and relation to help sailors absorb and accept them. If it were easy for sailors to toss their rating and identity aside, then they probably were not as emotionally invested in the Navy as we hoped. Overall we think this change is positive and our sailors will come around, but it may take some time to work through the denial and anger, to push through the bargaining, wade through the depression, and come out the other side to acceptance. It is the job of the Chiefs’ Mess to help the Navy through those stages of this significant but needed change. www.usni.org/magazines/proceedings/2016-11/navy-ratings-sail-sunset

A Trump effect? 'Cause I know, sure as shit, the upper chain rarely backs down due to a serf uprising in the ranks... Ratings restored: Effective immediately, sailors will get their job titles backBy: David B Larter and Mark Faram, December 20, 2016 Navy leaders are reversing their controversial decision to eliminate sailors’ ratings and will restore job titles across the fleet, according to a Navy message set for release Wednesday. Effective immediately, enlisted sailors will officially regain their ratings, the traditional job titles that have inspired a deep cultural loyalty and that have defined enlisted career tracks for generations, Navy officials said. The move comes three months after the Navy stunned sailors around the world in September by eliminated ratings titles, including those such as boatswain’s mate that dated back to the founding of the service. The extraordinarily rare move comes after a fierce backlash from the fleet that became a distraction from the Navy's broader effort to reform the antiquated personnel system, Navy officials said. www.navytimes.com/articles/ratings-restored-effective-immediately-sailors-will-get-their-job-titles-back
