While I read the bad news daily and sit back waiting for the other shoe to drop I have to scratch my head and ask myself why business is so good. As we are basically a specialized make to order manufacturing company with 3-15 day part delivery and have very little make to stock products incoming orders continue to be at record highs with matching production output. We had been slowly adding employees over the past year but now are making a jump by 15% in our number of employees. There have been several promotions from within including my son in law to Production/Plant Manager which will free me from daily duties to concentrate on product/process improvement and special projects with customers. We are also adding a new sales manager to manage the sales growth as well as 3-4 employees in the plant including a maintenace technician.
The agency that I work with for new hires knows my preference to hire veterans and I am pleased to say I just hired a 27 year old recently released 7 year army vet with several tours in Iraq whose last tour of duty was in Kosovo. I hope to be able to add 2-3 more vets (young or old) in the next couple weeks.
As I said I cannot explain why business is so good but until the tsunami hits I guess all I can do is enjoy riding the wave and be prepared for the eventual fall.

Glad to hear it Michael, you must have a niche sewed up. Supply and demand is what makes the world go round. Socialism makes it go all pear-shaped. Here is a video of another lucky guy for your amusement; www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3pjq0WAupcDave

Michael you are hiring good people and doing things the right way. That approach stands out in today's world. My guess is you also do things the biblical way, and God blesses that. Congratulations, and good job being a good man. God Bless you.

As I said before you now have a pretty knowledgeable 'defense' force, go ahead and organize 'em into a local militia out of 'em.
Prob cause you have a niche sewn up... are other businesses around you doing the same

We do have a niche market in that we supply a quick delivery on custom saw bodies and parts. We have no foreign competition because they cannot meet the delivery requirements and we have only one domestic competitor. The market is large enough that it takes both of us to serve it and neither one of us could serve the entire market. On the other hand the market is not large enough to encourage new competitors to enter it due to the large cost of equipment required to produce the product.
Other manufacturing in our area also seems to be staying busy but like us they have been very cautious about adding full time employees. We got tot he point where it was necessary. We also have invested about half a million in new equipment this year to help handle the increase.
As for the 'defense force' the concept has not been lost on me...

Of course you know Michael, when the IRS sees your income to debt ratio and your 2014 projected income taxes, they are going to feel like they got to do something drastic. We can't have all this rampant Capitalism running wild now can we ? It might just spread to others and then where would the USSA be? You're in danger of going Galt my boy.

Dave I went Galt in my mind sometime ago. I refuse to support them and yet also refuse to feel guilty about what they do with what they steal from me and my efforts. I will not allow them "the sanction of the victim."

I went Galt awhile back, I don't support TPTB in any way, shape or form. Instead, I do everything I can to make sure the .gov thieves get as little as they can from me.
After the Obamanation I got my hours wacked, so I spend that balance of that time they stole from me, jamming my finger knuckle deep into every marxist/communist/progressive/islamofacist eye I can.

Michael The success is probably based upon your product. When ever an economy begins to go south many of the people can see the trend and react. Some will move to areas where the free-stuff is less controlled. However others begin to collect things to make their own money. You help in the latter. I have been on a crusade since listening to the "Ruff Times" back in Jimmy Carter days. He preached that when the end came it would be without electricity, gasoline, and money. He suggested the assembly of hand tools, and small generators. Today may of us have those items. The older small electrical tools today even come with long charge batteries, and one company makes solar chargers for their tools. You also have to realize that in the height of the Depression some factories never missed a work day! My grandfather worked as a layout engineer for Continental Ginning, who later became Continental Canning. He went to work every day. The company gave those who worked Foods, called the bank and guaranteed their home loans, and called the city of Birmingham and guaranteed their utility bills. The received a bus pass every Friday at closing for the next week. Some stayed and kept up their working, and others went home and bitched.
