I ran into someone today who burns my butt!!!
I went to a church picnic today. I got a chance to meet the new guy who claimed to be a former Marine.
I asked him if he was a 8541 (Old MOS Scout Sniper). He said No. I was a Scout Sniper. I answered him, "OH you are a 0317 (New MOS Scout Sniper). He said "No." I played dumb and said "What did you do in the Marine Corps?" He said "I was a Scout Sniper". I answer and said, "OH! You were one of the Big Dogs, a 6014 (Old MOS for Jet Mech.) Scout Sniper. Man that must have been great." He answered, Yeah, I was a Scout Sniper. I asked if he used a M40A2 (Marine Issue Sniper Rifle), he said 'No." I asked was it a M40A5 (Newer Sniper Rifle)?" He said "No. We used a rifle that broke down into four parts. We had to be able to put it back together blindfolded in less than .30 Sec." (Marine Scout Snipers do not use rifles that break down)
I had to walk away when he started talking about them giving him Diaziapan (Spelling) to calm his nerves, and help him shoot better. He talked about setting there for 11 hours without moving.
I was at a Church Picnic and could not call him a lying piece of floating dog crap in front of everyone. Punch him in the throat, and spit on his face as he laid there gagging.
Why do these Hemorrhoids on the butt hole of life do this stupid stuff?
I called Jack, and talked about this. This stuff makes me sick, and chaffs my butt raw.
Then to beat it all. I am talking with our Pastor, and my mother, and this hunk of putrid squid vomit came over and started talking about being in New York on 9/11. He felt the ground shake when the plane hit the building 42 blocks away, and the cops gave him a police escort back across the bridge, because he was needed to guard the entrance to a secret Nuke Reactor on a Military base.
I had to bite my tongue, go set in my car till it was time to go. If I had not, we were going to have major issues at our Church Picnic.
I know his wife she seems OK, his mother-in-law (nice lady from Church), or his father-in-law (nice church guy) do not know this is 100% pure bull crap.
What do I do, that doesn't get me sent to jail, or hurt these nice people?

I would take him off to the side, tell him his story doesn't add up and as an honorably discharged veteran you demand more information. Ask him about his decorations, maybe if he comes up with some we could take his name and try to find out if he was even in the military.

Let him know that stolen valor is highly frowned upon by the military and that if about 12 of your Marine buddies ever caught someone making such false claims, things could get very ugly.

I had a similar conversation with a Marine who works for me today while we were on break at work. He said he was sitting at the bar at a local club having a beer and listening to the band when he over heard a guy a couple stools down going on about his service in the Marines and the number of tours he had done in Afghanistan. He aid that the guy was dressed in BDU's and going on. Scott spoke up and asked which bases he had served out of and the guy was vague. Scott continued to ask him questions about who he served under and who he served with and the guy continued to brush off but then go back to his exploits in the Marines. Scott stood up paid for his beer and told the guy he had done his time in Afghanistan and that no one forgets the bases they served out of, no one forgets who they served under, and especially no one forgets who they served with and bled with. Scott simply said I am a Marine and you sir are not. I am leaving before I do something I will regret.
I have never served in the armed services but nothing is more despicable than those who would dishonor those who have served by making claims to service when they have not served. My father was a decorated WWII vet and made his way from the beaches of France to Germany, He seldom spoke about his service and never about what he did to earn the bronze star. Occasionally I had the honor to sit just outside the circle and listen when my father got together with a few other vets and after a beer or two shared their experiences and thoughts on their service.

hefferman1 You can do what I did to a Seal wantabee here at the flea market. If you go to www.military.com and sign up they will allow you to find a buddy. Take his name, branch, and your state. They will return a list for you. If as we both suspect he was a marine corps reservist and cooked or what ever it will spell it out. Then if not satisfied go to: www.anzmi.net/report.htmlThe only reason I would get upset is that these guys use this lie to get better jobs, and better pay, usually in LEO or Fire Services. Then when the chips get down they fold and others get hurt or dead.

In this area it seems like every old guy I run into was in SF in Vietnam and was in MACV-SOG or SFOD-D and can't tell me anything about it (they can't if they were but I doubt if they were). All you can do is avoid them.

As for Heff's story, I was talking to a buddy (marine) about this one time and he just shook his head, he said from the number of guys he's heard say they were Scout Snipers... he figured the USMC must have given at least half the Corps the designation.

I actually take the opposite approach to poseurs as the vast majority of guys. I just don't give two shits. Seriously, if a guy's life is SO pathetic that he needs to make up some heroic fiction to sustain himself in the eyes of others, how many other lies is he telling? My life is too short to go correcting people, and I'm not going to destroy some wife's life because she's stupid enough to believe his bullshit. When someone throws the SF or Ranger tag out there, I ask which sub-element they served with (which Group or which Battalion), and it's relatively certain that if they're legit, I know SOMEONE in their chain-of-command, or know someone who knows someone. If they can't throw out two or three legit answers to questions, I just walk away. If everyone I ever met who claimed to be a SEAL/SF/Ranger/Scout-Sniper/Force Recon Marine, was legit, there would be NO conventional force military. On the other hand, if I wasted the effort to correct every poseur I ever met, I'd be too busy correcting dumbasses to live my own life.

m21308 Depending where in NC you live it may be true. I found a lot of guys from Mac-V SOG moved to small towns west of Bragg and provide Regional Forces for the SF qual courses. I stopped for a cup of coffee over by Troy and the place looked like old home week on Smokebomb hill.

I stopped for a cup of coffee over by Troy and the place looked like old home week on Smokebomb hill. Yeah you are right. I don't doubt that there are plenty of the real McCoy around here. Just seems like what Avordvet said about scout snipers. Seems like from listening to these guys there were few regular infantrymen in Vietnam and nobody there was a clerk, cook or mechanic etc... And while some have mentioned the 173rd Abn Bde.. When I first got to the 82nd in 1980, my platoon sergeant, two other PSGs in our company, the 1SG and the CSM were all Sky Soldiers. What a great bunch to learn from. It takes a lot of spokes to keep the wheel turning and it just seems that it would be easier for these guys to realize that and be proud of the spoke that they were rather than try to live a lie.

be proud of the spoke that they were rather than try to live a lie. I agree, but I'm afraid there are a number who were never even in. ======= When I first got to the 82nd in 1980Oh, boy. I remember enlisting in Richmond, taking the bus to Fort Bragg for Basic and as we entered the gate at dawn, spied the sign "Welcome to the home of the 82nd Airborne" I thought, what have I gotten myself into this time.

Gentlemen, all I can say is God Bless each of you, and thank you for your service. What others may think or say about you...or the glory they wish to steal from you, can never tarnish or diminish what you sacrificed for our country. Although I never served, I salute you, my brothers and friends......

I thought, what have I gotten myself into this time. I think that went through most of our heads when we stepped off the bus... and into the real world.

If I had a $100 bill for every fat truck driver who said he was in Delta Force (and if they all were, then Delta Force is a division-size unit), or every drunk who said he was an SF operator with three tours in Afghanistan, I'd have enough cash to buy the arsenal from Hell.
Heff, take it from me: You Need To Destroy Him. Loudly and in front of God and everybody shout "I call Bullshit!" and let the chips fall. His family needs to be shown the hard reality of his lying ass.
Stolen valor may have been shot down by the Black-Robed Priests, but that doesn't mean we as veterans can't police our own ranks. Any war is fought one skirmish at a time. Squash him like a roach, and move on to the next poser.

I was taking two Marines back to Camp Pendleton from San Clemente in my cab when the younger of the two stated telling his buddy about Vietnam. He looked much too young and so I asked him the month and year he went over. When he said November 1975, I said the last Marines left Saigon April 30. Didn't hear a peep after that.

I just never want to hear any of that again. There's a bunch of stuff I don't remember about my 6 years in the Marines. I only remember the name of one of the Officers I served with. Gunnys, Staff Sargents, other NCO's... Those I remember. Bases, schools, MOS, shooting scores, weapons qualified with, deployments, some of the people you serve with... You NEVER forget. I've even spent some time trying to track a few of them down and have them on my Facebook friends. The best you can do with a poser is to publicly embarrass them. If this may backfire on you, as in church politics, and you just HAVE to say something... Do it one on one and let them know you know they are FOS. I've run into guys who embellish their service. Some tales get taller in the retelling... Others are outright frauds and are just despicable.

When it comes to church situations, you are expected to turn the other cheek. However this is a situation of more than pettieness. it is about more than honor, and can lead to faudulent situations in short order. To do the right thing is called for, and so far you are doing it. But this fool needs to be stopped, but not at the cost of your own reputation. SO what I would do is have a meeting with your Pastor, and discuss the situation openly and honestly. It doesnt benefit anyone to tear the Adam Henry apart if the issue is one of mental illness, in which case, your Pastor would be best suited to approach the guy's family about the issue. On the other hand, if he is just a typical POS, then you have had a chance to speak with the person who will be able to counsel others who may feel you have made transgressions should you need to rip the guy a new one, as well as discuss the group dynamic with you and perhaps find a better course of action. No matter what path you take, before you take it give yourself the chance to identify all your options first, Thalking it over with the pastor may open some extra ones up for you.
