What is frustrating is that defense is a legitimate function of the federal government. Now we can all debate how much, where, how, etc., and that is the point of the representatives doing that on this subject.
However, the other items included in the "automatic cuts" are NOT legitimate functions of the federal government, so to "cut" them is not the proper solution, to eliminate them is.
This is just another example of the flim-flam which exists in D.C., and the failing of the American People to properly hold government to its proper role.
This process is changing, as the American People awaken from their confused state of proper Constitutional role of the federal and state governments.
Elimination of the unConstitutional programs on the federal level, will not only free up the money for the Constitutional items, but it will also reduce the number and size of the issues the feds deal with. This will make waste/fraud more difficult, and allow a more focused overwatch of those issues by the people, making it easier for the People to hold their reps responsible.
I could care less about the "blame" in D.C., two twits arguing over things they should have no input in at all, it is meaningless. I like the idea of "mandatory cuts", as it makes folks in D.C. squirm. But it also instills the notion that cuts are the path to fixing the issues in D.C.
Frankly, the truth be told, the problem in D.C. is neither the fault of the Republicans or the Democrats, it is the fault of the American People for letting these groups grasp so much power. Again, the fix is in motion, and I suspect this is part of the reason you are seeing so much squealing in D.C. I suspect they are starting to realize their gravy train is running out of track.
The big question is, when the wheels come off, will the People of this country demand Freedom or servitude?
While I am far from convinced, it sure looks like Freedom has the edge, as of late.
