The Declaration of Arbroath was the first expression of "Popular Sovereignty". "...for, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom – for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself." This may have been a fore runner of the Declaration of Independence. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declaration_of_Arbroath

This may have been a fore runner of the Declaration of Independence. The founders were well read and took their inspiration from many varied sources. It was from 1320 and may have influenced them. Another thing to take into account is that 9 of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were Scottish.
