I made that mistake once when I was 18, stationed in Memphis. I got pulled over for going thru a "yellow" light and the cop wanted to search my car. I allowed it and he found a half full bottle of Jack Daniels under my seat. It was from a party at the river I was at two weeks prior that I didn't know about. He took the bottle but let me go with a warning about going thru yellow lights and Tenn. open container laws.
Lesson learned, I never had my vehical searched again.

Luckily, early on in my military career I had a couple of friends that were "old school" Deputies, so I got a very good brief on my "Rights" that have helped me out quite a few times over my life.
But you have to admit, it is pretty sad state of affairs when you have to be concerned about the "Good Guys" trying to entrap you or arresting you for unrelated secondary "crimes" just because you spoke to them... Martha Stewart and Lewis Libby come to mind.

Good advice, especially if you are courteous to the police. Do not make the mistake of being a smart ass about your rights and shoving it in their faces. I have seen people make that mistake, before. It never helps and almost always hurts your cause. Officers will make snap judgments about a person based on their behavior and demeanor. If you act like an ass, they will assume that you are one and that you are more likely to have done something wrong. If you act polite and courteous, they will more likely believe that you are harmless and allow you to go about your business.

Did you ever drink a "Silky's Diver"? It was in a paint can.

When dealing with a cop, remember most of the bad ones are on power trips. The best way to disarm them is to be polite, but stand on your rights, and don't give an inch.
Be firm, know your rights, don't say anything you don't have too, if push comes to shove, ask for a lawyer right then and there.
