In our day and age, it seems that there is a fundamental lack of understanding about liberty. When the American Dream is downgraded and understood not to be the philosophy that you can achieve anything if you set your mind and spirit to it, but rather the understanding that it is nothing more than owning a home, we have a real problem.
Gathering others to our cause, the cause of liberty, is no easy task. When one understands liberty as the sovereign right of the individual to live according to his conscious, it is easy to speak the words of liberty to him. If, however, one understands liberty as the fundamental right to avert failure in one's life, we cannot communicate with that person.
The big question we have is in how to help others see where liberty is located and how the current path of our country does not intersect that place. What is the best way to teach someone about the principles upon which our country was built when they don't understand the fundamentals of liberty?
Thoughts?

I try to use daily examples of issues I am trying to explain, an example is a guy that did not understand what the big deal about gun control was, I asked him if he had ever been in a court room, he said yes, I asked him how many folks in the court room were armed, he said only law enforcement, I explained that he was seeing gun control in action, no one in the court room can resist anything that is done in the court room, because they have no means to resist, and to speak out would land you in jail, regardless of you being correct or not. This is just an example of one way to approach a topic from a daily perspective, using examples of things in our daily life that most folks don't think about.

I like the courtroom example, it'll get tested today on some friends.
Someone recently explained that there are really only two ways for someone to get you to do what they want you to do;
1) Negotiate. Plead. Pay. Convince with reason or logic. Promise something in exchange. All peaceful measures - no infringement on your liberties.
2) Use force - you have no liberties.

I'll tell you something I've found to be true.
The best way to turn a liberal into a conservative is to take them shooting.
No amount of talking in the world will convince them of anything.
But an hour or two of learning how to accurately hit a target with a couple of fun guns, and it's all over.
A "right" they never considered as anything but evil is suddenly something that belongs to them. Something they have a personal vested interest in.
If they want to go shooting again, and they inevitably do, the 2nd amendment suddenly becomes very important.
There's something about the empowerment, I think. I haven't quite figured it out, but dear hubby and I have made it a project and dubbed it the "Take a Liberal Shooting".
Not once has a liberal ever left the range thinking the way he did when he walked in. ;D

The best way i've ever found to explain what true liberty is: It's the ability to do what you want with out .gov interference as long as it doesn't harm another person. It doesn't matter what the endeavor is, you suceed or fail on your own. No gov money to help you build your life or keep it afloat. It's called personal responsibility, the only person to blame for failure is yourself but the rewards for success in that case are so much better because you did it yourself.
I also explain to people that the flipside to liberty is .gov control of every aspect of our lives. That usually confuses them because of all the controls .gov have over everyday life.

I also explain to people that the flipside to liberty is .gov control of every aspect of our lives. That usually confuses them because of all the controls .gov have over everyday life. There is no doubt about that one. People still like to call this the land of the free, but that has become nothing but an empty feel-good statement. When you need permission to buy a gun, build a garage, drive a car, own a business, buy medication, fix a car, sell your chicken eggs, babysit kids, own a pet, have a public demonstration, home school your kids, etc., this is not a free nation but rather a police state. We have been painted into a corner by bureaucracy due to our lack of attention. Few realize that that our liberties have already been removed. I actually had a conversation before the election with a young lady who was still wet behind the ears from her college education. She supports the premises of socialism. When I told her that I stand with Patrick Henry and say, "Give me liberty or give me death!" she said to me, "I really don't understand that. Why can't you just live by the rules?" I almost had a heart attack when I heard that. I thought, "Lord, please don't let this be a good example of what the current generation is churning out." I think we have a long road ahead if we don't speak up now.
