'American Taliban' Lindh released as Afghan war still boils
Paul HANDLEY, May 23, 2019
Washington (AFP) - John Walker Lindh, the US Muslim convert who came to be known as the "American Taliban" after being captured while fighting in Afghanistan in 2001, was released Thursday after serving 17 years in a federal prison.
The US Bureau of Prisons confirmed his early morning release from the federal high security prison in Terre Haute, Indiana.
His lawyer Bill Cummings told CNN that 38-year-old Lindh, suspected by some of still harboring radical Islamic views, will settle in Virginia under strict probation terms that limit his ability to go online or contact other Islamists.
Exclusive: Johnny Spann on John Walker Lindh: Disgrace We Let a Traitor into the Prison System to Reform Us Rather than Us Reform Him
ROBERT KRAYCHIK, 24 May 2019
Johnny Spann — father of Mike Spann, a former CIA officer and the first American killed in Afghanistan — described the early release of Islamic terrorist John Walker Lindh from federal prison as a “disgrace,” offering his remarks on Friday’s edition of SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Daily with host Alex Marlow.
Spann’s comments came after Thursday’s early release of Islamic terrorist John Walker Lindh from federal prison for “good behavior,” 17 years into a 20-year sentence.
Lindh was convicted in 2002 following a plea deal approved of by then-President George Bush and then-Deputy Attorney General Michael Chertoff. He pleaded guilty to providing services to a designated terrorist organization and carrying explosives during the commission of a felony.
Bush Admin Sold ‘American Taliban’ John Walker Lindh’s Plea Deal As A Win For America. Now He’s Free

Former President George W. Bush’s administration sold the 2002 plea deal with John Walker Lindh, an American who joined the Taliban, as a victory in the war on terror that would make the American people safer.
But 17 years later, Lindh is out of prison, and his praise for terrorists while in prison has experts concerned he might still pose a threat.
Lindh originally faced up to life in prison under the original 10 charges brought by the Bush administration, which included conspiring to kill Americans.
Lindh was present at a 2001 Taliban prisoner uprising that killed CIA officer Johnny Micheal Spann. Spann was killed shortly after interrogating Lindh, though Lindh maintained he had nothing to do with Spann’s death.
