Been working a project that, in the end, had me and everyone I've informed about this, shaking our heads in disbelief.
As most of you AR buffs know, there are basically Four different types of AR's.
AR Rifle: Usually 20" length or better.
AR Carbine: Usually 16" length
AR Pistol: 20" down to 4.5"
NFA Short Barreled Rifle: Anything under 16"(requires NFA Registration)
Awhile back a buddy brought me a friends AR that was jammed up hard, after clearing the jam (caused by the use of a POS Charging Handle) I took stock of the weapon and told my friend to check with the individual as the weapon looked illegal, set up as a AR Pistol with an 11.5" barrel but with a front vertical grip, which would put the weapon in the NFA AOW category... a manufactured short barreled rifle. Big time illegal.
Doing some research I found there is actually a Fifth type of AR, in-between Pistol and SBR... Go figure!
Here is the type of weapon and the supporting ATF Letters: franklinarmory.com/franklin-armory-xo-26-s/
Well being a guy who likes to do my own thing, I was gonna build one, the requirements are:
AR Lower must be set up as a Pistol, the weapon has to have an overall length of at least 26 inches with a Non-threaded barrel and a forward vertical Pistol Grip, if it has threads then you would have to pin and weld a flash hider, muzzle brake on the barrel.
Drawback: After making it a "firearm", if you conceal it, CCW or not, it now becomes a NFA AOW... again, big time illegal.
So in the end, I found that just setting it up as a pistol with 11.5 inch barrel and a stabilizing brace, to be the best of all worlds, with an ATF determination allowing the shouldering of the stabilizing brace (www.sb-tactical.com/blog/sb-tactical-announces-reversal-atf-open-letter-use-sb-tactical-pistol-stabilizing-braces/), and the ATF Determination that a Magpul style Angled Forward Grip is allowed on Pistols (blog.roninsgrips.com/atf-letter-stating-magpul-afg-legal-use-ar-pistols/).
Not only does this show the idiocy of the BATFE and NFA laws, It shows the only obvious way to go, is Pistol. You have a legal short barreled rifle... er, pistol.. that you can set up to fire in multiple calibers (make sure the AR lower is registered as a pistol and the caliber is listed as MULTI)
Cost:
Lower $50
Lower Build Kit: $65
Flip up sights: $30
Pistol Tube, buffer assy and Stabilizing Brace: $75
Upper: 11.5" 5.56: $150

and you have a nice compact weapon, but just like any other AR, the accessories are many.
