Deputy Who Did Not Confront Parkland Gunman Claims ‘No Legal Duty’ to Act
AWR Hawkins, 12 Dec 2018 2:24
The deputy who stood by while the February 14, 2018, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting was taking place asked a judge to rule that he had “no legal duty” to protect the students.
The Sun-Sentinel reports that Scot Peterson’s attorney, Michael Piper, told Judge Englander Henning, “We want to say he had an obligation, but the law isn’t that. From a legal standpoint, there was no duty.”

Police Have No Duty To Protect Individuals
by Peter Kasler
Remember, even if the police were obligated to protect us (which they aren't), or even if they tried to protect us (which they often don't, a fact brought home to millions nationwide as they watched in horror the recent events in Los Angeles), most often there wouldn't be time enough for them to do it. It's about time that we came to grips with that, and resolved never to abdicate responsibility for our personal safety, and that of our loved ones, to anyone else.

Supreme Court Ruling: Police Have No Duty to Protect the General Public
Tribunist, June 16, 2016
However, did you know that the government, and specifically law enforcement, does not have any duty to protect the general public? Based on the headline and this information, you might assume this is a new, landmark decision. However, it has long been the court’s stance that, essentially, the American people are responsible for taking case of their own personal safety.
According to a 2005 ruling from the SCOTUS, the government doesn’t even have a duty to protect you if you’ve obtained a court issued restraining order. From a New York Times article on that ruling:
