Two U.S. Soldiers Killed in Afghanistan as Pompeo Arrives to Talk Peace
SIMON KENT, 26 Jun 2019
Two U.S. service members were killed during a military operation in eastern Afghanistan early on Wednesday morning, NATO said, the latest international casualties as the U.S. and the Taliban prepare for talks.
Their loss came just hours after U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made an unannounced visit to Kabul and outlined his hopes for a peace deal with the Taliban “before September 1.”
“In accordance with U.S. Department of Defense policy, the names of the service members are being withheld until 24 hours after notification of next of kin is complete,” NATO’s Resolute Support mission said.
The Taliban claimed in a statement they killed two American soldiers in an ambush in Sayed Abad district of southern Wardak province on Wednesday. There was no immediate confirmation or denial from NATO whether it was the same attack.
Another of Trumps failed promises; stopping the endless wars.
The toll continues to rise, year by year...

The U.S. military says an American service member has been "killed in action" in Afghanistan but offered no further details about the service member's identity or circumstances surrounded the death.
In a telephone interview, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahed said the militant group was behind Saturday's killing, but offered no further details.
U.S. peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad has been holding talks with the Taliban in recent weeks to try and negotiate an end to the war in Afghanistan. The current conflict began in 2001 with the U.S.-led invasion to unseat the Taliban and hunt down al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden.
After nearly 18 years, it is America's longest war, in which over 2,400 American service members have died.

Military.com, By Oriana Pawlyk, 10 Jul 2019
A majority of veterans taking part in a new research study says that the cost and burden of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan outweigh any successes or progress made in either conflict.
A Pew Research Center report published Wednesday states that 64% -- or almost two-thirds -- of veterans polled in a new survey said the Iraq war "was not worth fighting," and 58% said the same about the war in Afghanistan.
Pew surveyed 1,284 U.S. military veterans between May 14 and June 3. It conducted a parallel survey of 1,087 U.S. adults May 14-24 to compare findings.
"Veterans who served in either Iraq or Afghanistan are no more supportive of those engagements than those who did not serve in these wars," the report states. More than 60 percent of Americans felt the same about the Iraq War; 59% of the public surveyed agreed on Afghanistan.

This week America's longest war in Afghanistan turned eighteen, and so did its youngest solder. To mark the occasion, ABC News profiled the US occupation's newest American member: "Pvt. Hunter Nines is about to join a war nearly as old as he is," the report said.
Reflecting on his first impending deployment with the Army Pvt. Nines said, "I didn't have a lot of thoughts on Afghanistan in particular." He was but 7 months when the war began with the arrival of US troops on Oct. 7, 2001 following the 9/11 attacks. "I honestly just had the notion of I wanted to serve, and wherever that is, that's where I'll go."
