On the 'Castle Defense' and 'Stand Your Ground' Laws

On first reading I immediately went into the old 'Owens is being a retard' mode... But, although it's idiotic that citizens have to dance around gray areas in protecting property and life, in todays PC atmosphere care should be taken to check off the self-defense 'rules of engagement' boxes where possible.
Over the years I have had to pull my weapon four times, all ended well, without me having to pull the trigger. But, in every engagement the 'Golden Rules of self-defense' flashed though my mind...
Ability- Does the person have the Ability to injure or kill you.
Opportunity- Does the person have the Opportunity to injure or kill you.
Jeopardy- Are you in immediate Jeopardy of being injured or killed.
From there it's either Escalation or De-escalation.
In a bunch of states that have strong 'castle' and 'stand your ground laws, it's pretty common sense; someone violates your property and/or person, you can escalate to deadly force immediately with no 'duty' to retreat or de-escalate. Even so, I still recommend you always adhere to the 'rules'.

So let’s quickly sum up the tactical and legal mistakes here.
*Didn’t immediately call law enforcement
*Left the relative safety of his home to address completely unknown threats
*Fired at a suspect that does not appear to have been armed
*Shot at said suspect while he was fleeing the scene
I’m sure we’ll get the usual response of “well, I live in Texas, and I can shoot at thieves on my property!” Who cares? This isn’t Texas.
