The Southern States did not call up armies to invade the north. They called up their forces to rebel an invasion by northern aggressors. As Jefferson Davis stated in what became known as his "all we ask is to be let alone" speech to his congress:
"we feel that our cause is just and holy; we protest solemnly in the face of mankind that we desire peace at any sacrifice save that of honor and independence; we seek no conquest, no aggrandizement, no concession of any kind from the States with which we were lately confederated; all we ask is to be let alone; that those who never held power over us shall not now attempt our subjugation by arms. This we will, this we must, resist to the direst extremity. The moment that this pretension is abandoned the sword will drop from our grasp, and we shall be ready to enter into treaties of amity and commerce that cannot but be mutually beneficial. So long as this pretension is maintained, with a firm reliance on that Divine Power which covers with its protection the just cause, we will continue to struggle for our inherent right to freedom, independence, and self-government."

Walmart, Amazon, Sears, eBay to stop selling Confederate flag merchandise
Walmart, Amazon, eBay and Sears all announced bans on the sale of Confederate flag merchandise, amid an intensifying national debate over the use of the controversial flag.
The announcements are the latest indication that the flag, a symbol of the slave-holding South, has become toxic in the aftermath of a shooting last week at a historic African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina.

Berks County company will no longer make controversial Confederate flag
A major flag manufacturer says it will no longer make the controversial Confederate battle flag..
Valley Forge Flag Company announced the decision Tuesday, saying the killing last week of nine people at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina, had been a watershed moment in the debate over the stars and bars.
Valley Forge Vice President Reggie VandenBosch says the Pennsylvania-based company had long been uncomfortable with making what the flag industry had viewed as a historical artifact.
VandenBosch says other manufacturers may follow suit.
Valley Forge is pulling references to the Confederate flag from its website and telling its plant managers to cancel pending orders. VandenBosch says the company hadn't received many orders for the flag before the ban.
Valley Forge's manufacturing plants are in South Carolina and Alabama.

Beck: Why Would Anyone Fly Confederate Flag? ‘It’s a Flag of Another Country’
Talk radio host Glenn Beck argued wondered why anyone would fly the Confederate flag because “It’s a flag of another country” on Monday.
He began by declaring, “The Confederate flag makes no sense to me whatsoever.”
Beck added that while it’s a decision for South Carolina to make, he would vote to remove it if he lived there because “It was a symbol of…division, of not black and white, the country. It’s a flag of another country. Why are you flying that? Are you proud that you were another country at some point?” And that some people were proud of the Confederacy.
He continued that there is a racist element to the flag, and that the Confederate Constitution shows there was “no ifs, and, or buts” regarding the Confederacy’s racism. And “It was not about state’s rights, because you didn’t have a right as a state in the Confederacy to go against slavery. So, there’s no state’s rights there. That’s not about state’s rights.”
