Got outta this 'discussion' years ago, used to be a big fan of the .45 and although I still am, my std carry guns these days are the .380 and the 9mm... the first for compactness/concealability, and the second for weight and amount of rounds carried in the weapon (17+1). Back in the day (mil and civ) I carried the venerable heavy assed .45 and 5 magazines (35 rnds), now it's a Glock and 3 mags (51 rnds). Yeah they have high cap mags for the new .45s, but then the grip grows in size to where it can barely be held unless ya got bear paw sized hands. Make mine…nine?Jul 23 2014 by Mike Since the H&K post and subsequent discussion the other day, I’ve been mulling this over some myself: coldfury.com/2014/07/23/make-mine-nine/

When confused by events simply follow the money! More important is the earier availability of mags and rounds off the field as you go. While .380 is compact if you want it for a war you best get into reload. It took e about a year to pickup dies, bullet molds, and accessories to allow me to roll my own

I quit bothering with a .380 (had a Colt Mustang) when I watched them bounce off a 78 T-bird quarter panel from 5 yards while the 9x18 Makarov easily penetrated. But luckily I DO have big bear paws so I do like my G-21, though My better half has a G-19 that I also really like a lot. My carry is the same as it has been for the past 21 years, my S&W CS-45 Chief Special. I would like to replace that with a G-19.

Most are not gonna be shooting T-bird panels with a .380 and like any other weapon, the type of ammo you use is everything, for self-defense I usually carry with the 85 grain silver tip HP's, for hammering a 90 grain ball. The main selling point for the .380 is its compactness, carry a full sized weapon Inside the Waist Band for any period of time and you will see why the .380 has been one of the hottest selling handguns for years. It also depends on where you are and what you are doing, on the farm I'm usually carrying the 'ole 6 inch .357, Urban a good 'ole 9mm. I still wanna get a lever action rifle in .357 to go with the pistol.

My "church" carry is the Ruger LC9 with grip extension on the magazine for the same reason. You can carry it inside the waistband comfortably and it is virtually invisible. My wife and I own various hand guns from several 22's to 38spl to 357 to 380 to 9mm to 45's to a S&W 500 magnum. All get fired fairly regularly as we rotate what we bring to the range each trip along with bringing our standard carry weapons. My wife and I both own a FNX 45 tactical that we like and I recently acquired a Kimber Covert II that I need to get to the range but the trigger mpull on it is outstanding. Still day to day I carry my LC9 while working and my M&P 9 in my vehicle.

Much of the ammo on market is made for target practice. Same problem with 9mm. I range fire 9mm 115gr, but keep 9mm 128gr for protection. My walther loads .380 by 86 gr for range, but I feed it .380 by 120gr for protection. Makes you wear a wrst brace after a while.. Learned this from a story by a MI 6 who was answering a James Bond question.

I reloaded both with Hornady HP-XTPs but ended up getting rid of the Colt since it was unreliable AND less effective, didn't have a decocker and was single action only. I have nothing against the .380 at all. It IS better than a .25 ACP.

Makes you wear a wrist brace after a while.
My pocket carry is a .357 LCR (17 ounces) with Speer LE 158 gr. I use two wrist exercises most everyday.
